Dance of any type is a form of art and self expression. Salsa is one of the distinct forms of dance that has its very own history. The word -˜salsa’ means -œmixture- of ingredients and therefore it is known as a fusion of both African and European Latin dance forms. It basically originated in 1920′s from US immigrants from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. It is considered to be one of the ball room dance forms which are mostly partner dance forms. However, it is also performed solo and with a set routine in a circle. Music suitable for salsa is known as salsa music with various ranges based on which salsa has various further types. The common range varies from 150 bpm (beats per minute) to 250 bpm and 160 bpm to 220bpm.
Every salsa composition is based on Clave which is a key instrument in salsa song. Although now days there are other rhythms which are used in salsa but clave has its own flavor which allows a dancer to freely spin and do hip movements with fast musical beat. Generally salsa dance styles are named after the area where they originated like in United States salsa has three major forms, New York salsa (east coast salsa), Los Angeles salsa and Cuban salsa which is the most traditional salsa common within the Cuban American community in Miami. Basically salsa is a Cuban music and is derived from Son, Mambo and Son Montuno (other genres of Cuban music). Salsa music has been in a process of fusion since 1940s as Havana musicians and Nuyorican musicians mixed sounds from Jazz and blues with salsa and also tried to create a fusion of Afro-Cuban sounds in soul music. It has so many variations and multiple styles that sometimes it is interchanged with Jazz, pop and rock styles. Modern salsa is only dance oriented genre and enjoyed all over the world. Being a highly entertaining form of dance, it stays amongst the most popular trends of the present time.
