Enjoying the Food and Drink of Alicante

Visiting Alicante provides the perfect opportunity to experience the fresh, Mediterranean cuisine that is so important to the people that live there. Food and wine are prepared to a very high standard in Alicante and a trip to the Spanish province offers you the chance to indulge yourself with some of Spain’s finest cuisine.

Probably the single most important ingredient to any Alicante dish is rice. Inspired by Roman and Moorish influence, rice features in most Alicante dishes, most famously paella. In fact, paella brings together two of the things Alicante is most famous for, seafood and rice. Although popular throughout most of Spain, paella has a special connection to the Alicante region. Of course, there are other rice dishes available, paella simply having become the most famous.

Meat dishes include pork, as well as rabbit or arroz con conejo, which is extremely popular with locals. For vegetarians, arroz con costra or rice with a baked egg on top always proves popular.

Fish is naturally very popular with tuna being one of the most popular. Tuna is often sold as an entree, especially in a salted form, alongside a salad. Other fish which are important are red mullet and sardines, both of which are available in a large number of restaurants throughout Alicante. Seafood in Alicante extends beyond just fish, with squid and prawns extremely popular throughout the region.

For dessert one of the most popular dishes in the area is the nougat or turron. A turron is a typical dessert in Alicante, usually eaten at Christmas time. Made from almonds and sugar, the dessert is served in most restaurants in Alicante.

Alicante is also famous for dessert wine. Alicante is by no means as famous for its wines as some of the other regions in Spain, but is particularly famous for the production of El Fondillon. El Fondillon is made from overripe grapes and is a sweet dessert wine that is popular throughout Spain and various parts of Europe. Made from the Monastrell grape, El Fondillon has been recommended by the EEC as a high quality wine classed in the same field as Port, Champagne and Sherry.

While the proximity to the sea and a range of flights to Alicante make this a tempting holiday destination, one of the biggest attractions is the fine food and wine from the region. From the popular paella to El Fondillon, Alicante’s food and wine makes it an appetizing destination for any traveller.
