Will Bird Feeders Attract Birds To My Garden

Bird feeders will attract some birds to your garden, but there are other factors which help to encourage a wide variety of species. Simple measures can be taken which help to reduce the dangers to feeding birds, to attract them safely to your garden.

If you have a cat, or there are cats around who can access your garden, do not put food on the ground, as this only puts birds in an extremely vulnerable position. Instead, place bird feeders in places which cats are unable to reach, or use a bird table. Be careful not to place bird feeders near any surfaces from which cats can jump. It’s also a good idea to place prickly plants such as holly at the bottom of your bird feeding station, to prevent cats from sitting underneath in wait. To prevent cats from climbing bird tables, it’s a good idea to make it slippery, perhaps by using a metal pole, or placing obstacles such as plastic bottles around the bottom.

Wild bird friendly plants can be used, like prickly bushes and climbers, to provide a shelter for feeding birds, placed closely enough to provide cover but not close enough for cats to stalk. These plants often attract birds to nest and can be a great source of food.

Nest boxes are a great idea for attracting birds to your garden, but again, need to be placed out of feline reach. A cat’s close presence will scare parent foods from coming out of or coming into their nesting box, preventing them from being able to feed their young.

Taking the correct precautions to make your garden safe and comfortable, will attract wildlife, allowing you the opportunity to observe them. Feeding wildlife is a fantastic idea, ensuring them with a reliable source of food, and a safe area to feed and relax in.
