If you are the eco-friendly type person, then you are no doubt into water conservation. That means you are probably trying to figure out ways to collect the water and rainfall from your roof into collection containers and storage devices to later use on the landscaping of your home. This is becoming more and more common throughout the United States, and not only in drought areas, but in areas where there is lots of rainfall already. For instance in Portland Oregon over 50,000 homes have already disconnected from the storm drains. Instead, these homes collect rainwater into barrels, and then they use small electric pumps to water the grass with an articulating portable lawn watering unit, as well as using the water for their garden for organic fruits and vegetables. They even water their favorite shrubbery and even their indoor houseplants. It is terrific to see that people care enough to do these things, and others have decided they’d like to go one step further. They’d like to collect some hydroelectricity from their storm water gutter collection system downspouts, and they are wondering if this is possible. Well, after doing a little research on the topic we found that it is possible but it helps if you have adequate water flow, during large storms, and the advantage of height.Someone with a two-story house, or a two-story house on a hill would be much better to collect the water as far down as possible, and to get the most take advantage for the hydroelectric mini wheels. If you go onto the Internet you can find these hydroelectric mini wheels, and they are pretty easy to install. There is one thing you must remember however, and that is to get the most flow possible you must make sure that your downspouts and your gutters are cleared from debris. That means you will need to either re-work your current water collection system, or invest in a well engineered rain gutter system that prevents debris from ever collecting in it.If debris gets into the rain gutters and into the downspout it can jam up in the wheels on your Mini Hydro system. But with the right diversion system, filters, and proper sloping, you can have those little hydro-wheels spinning all day long during the next big storm. Why not treat yourself to a little free liquid energy from the sky? So, please consider all this and think on it.
