It’s always a worry with any new hobby – or sometimes even with one that you’ve been doing for some time – and meditation is no exception. Most beginners will question themselves and ask if the meditation technique they’re using is really the one that will allow them to do meditation properly. The first thing to bear in mind is that there are lots of different possible meditation techniques. And, like many things that we do as humans, there actually isn’t one single “correct way” to do meditation. So you can stop fretting now if you want to!Of course, that’s easier said than done.So here are some pointers on how to do meditation properly.Clear some spaceThat’s not just physical space to sit or lay down and meditate. It’s also space in your head, which is often more cluttered than a teenager’s bedroom. One objective of meditating on a regular basis is to do precisely this and quiet your mind. But it pays to at least make a start before you commence your meditation session.Start by taking a few deep breaths in and letting them flow back out again. Imagine that your body is being filled with pure air as you breathe in and get a sense that each time you breathe out, any impurities are flowing out of your body at the same time. These could be germs, bits of disease or just random thoughts that don’t belong with you at this moment in time. You’ll find yourself beginning to relax as you do this. And as you relax, your thoughts should start to just drift from one side of your mind to the other and then out as you expel air from your lungs. Rather than holding on to your thoughts as though they’re the most important thing in the world.Set aside the timeThis could easily have been the first item in this list. Some types of meditation take longer than others. Most guided meditations available will take at least half an hour, maybe as long as an hour, to complete. If you haven’t got that kind of time slot available at the moment, there’s no way that you can carry out those kind of meditations properly! So you either need to set aside more time to meditate or choose a different method of meditation that doesn’t involve as much time on a regular basis.Being biased, I’d suggest making the time but I know that there are other things going on in the world, so that’s not necessarily the most practical advice. So take a look at different meditation methods that will fit in with your schedule. Breathing meditation is one method that can be squeezed into fairly tight time slots. And a walking meditation can, by its very nature, be combined with other things. So something will fit with your time schedule and allow you to meditate properly, even if you’re pressed for time.Don’t sweat itChances are that if your mind is getting quieter and you’re getting more relaxed then whatever you’re doing is at least good enough. There’s no sense in worrying about whether every part of every meditation session is 100% perfect. It’s not an exam – you’re supposed to be relaxing, so stop worrying and just get on with things!
