Life Cycle of a Flea Similar to ticks, fleas have 4 developmental stages during their life. Unlike ticks, there are fortunately many more unfavorable conditions that can cause fleas to have a shortened life span. Fleas, because of their biological makeup do not favor dry areas. Since they cannot retain moisture when they breathe, they need humidity to survive.
Adults take a mere two weeks to form in their cocoon. This cocoon, or pupae when found cannot be killed by a spray. Not until the adults are emerging will a secondary spray or residual medicine kill the fleas. That’s why having a good program of Flea and Tick Control is so important. Peak conditions for fleas to live and develop are 65-70 F with a 70% relative humidity. Because of this, hot dry summers will severely inhibit the flea population. A rainy summer will help them increase in population. With prevailing good conditions fleas can live up to 8 months as long as they have a decent meal during that time. Without that meal, an adult flea lifespan is shortened to one or two months. With the right conditions, females can lay up to 800 eggs during their lifetime. They either lay them on the floor in a pets bedding material or on a host. The eggs will hatch in 2-12 days. Unfortunately, when good conditions do not exist one would think that the flea larvae would quickly die off. But they don’t. They can develop at a much slower pace and can survive up to 200 or more days. When these unfavorable conditions exist large populations of un-hatched flea pupae will gather. Once warmed or triggered by the presence of carbon dioxide, massive populations of fleas can hatch when a host is finally present. Once they do -œhook on- to a host they are free to hitchhike wherever they like. Take Control of the Fleas in Your Home and on Your Pet-¦ Unlike ticks, fleas have extremely strong hind legs. This allows them to jump up to 8- vertically and over 14- horizontally. Thinking they are confined to one area is absolutely incorrect. Keeping them confined to one area is nearly impossible. In order to be able to rid your pet and home of fleas successfully, you have to treat the pet, indoor areas of the house and any outdoor areas most likely to contain the fleas at the same time. Treating only one area or just the pet will not break the life cycle of the fleas hatching. Inside the house besides treating the infected areas, vacuuming is an effective approach to picking up eggs and adult stage fleas. Although successful at removing 50-60 % of the infestation, using a spray is absolutely a requirement. There will be different life cycles of the Fleas taking place in different areas of the house, outside the house and on the pet all occurring at the same time. However, the areas around where the pet normally walks, sleeps or lays down will contain the highest concentrations of Fleas. This dictates how one should treat the overall process of Flea removal although prevention is still as important if not more than the Flea Control itself. A residual spray that can control adult fleas should be used. Remember, flea larvae can last up to 200+ days when the conditions aren’t right for them to hatch normally. A follow-up of the spray is recommended to kill the adults that do hatch at around 210 days. Protecting your dog and cat with a proper Flea and Tick Control program is responsible pet care. Fleas and Ticks cause a lot of different problems for your pets including rashes, itching, allergic reactions and sometimes anemia. Fleas can carry tapeworms and they in rare cases can cause death.
