Midnight in Paris Movie Review

In “Midnight in Paris”, a Hollywood writer with a romanticized view of the 1920s learns that his nostalgia does not reflect reality. The eccentric Hollywood writer Gil Pender travels back in time to the elite intellectual party scene in Paris during the 1920s at midnight. He falls in love in this alternate world and feels conflicted about this because he is an engaged man. Gil’s experiences force him to have epiphanies about his relationship with his fiancee, his own life, and life itself. Most of this movie seems uneventful because Gil is having psychological experiences instead of events in his life. This movie shows that life experience can be found from just reflecting and dreaming. Gil’s travels to the past seem like dreams. Gil is the type of person who is often dreaming through life. This movie is repetitive but it is still captivating throughout the 94 minutes that it lasts. The film is visually dazzling and features the most clever dialogue. The uniqueness of the film combined with its exotic settings make the movie seem fresh throughout its repetition. This movie is not for everyone. It lacks a clear plot. The writer has a quirky sense of humor. This movie has repetition with its similar events and some of the famous spots in Paris might seem overused.Fans of the romantic comedy genre will probably be disappointed in this film. The film’s writer does not have the sense of humor that you see in romantic comedies. The humor is highbrow and sparse. This film is not for the short attention spans of a lot of modern movie viewers. Also, this movie is not conventionally romantic. In “Midnight in Paris”, romance is really just part of the path to self discovery. This film is not about romance. It is about self discovery that stems from romantic experiences.”Midnight in Paris” is really not about a love affair between two people. It is about a romantic man’s love affair with Paris, France. The man’s relationships with his love interests only serve to push Gil to discover more about himself as the viewer discovers more about Gil. A romanticized Paris takes the starring role in this movie. Gil’s perspective on Paris is what makes this movie a romantic movie.Midnight in Paris is an odd film. It is a film for people who think differently. This film is for patient people who love art, architecture, highbrow humor, and light psychological drama. It is not for romantic comedy fans.
