Humanities Is A Versatile Field That Can Shape One’s Outlook On The World

Never heard of humanities? It is actually a common choice of major for many students who prefer to study a few different disciplines. Unlike most degree programs, this one is not specific. It does not lead to one type of career; instead, it provides an education with multiple career choices and further personal benefits for students.Love music, fine arts, and literature? Luckily, a major in Arts and Humanities will allow students to major in all three subjects. There are no endless classes taken in one discipline. Students will study a variety of disciplines involving the arts and the humanities. The “arts” consist of performing arts, fine arts, art history, music, and more. The “humanities” involve history, philosophy, and language. The Arts and Humanities major can be more relaxed as far as classes required. There are a few restrictions, but students have the freedom to take classes outside of one subject. They are expected to have 35 to 40 credits in the arts or humanities, including philosophy or music; these classes may be broken into three or more disciplines. Students must take at least 12 credits in a subject they wish to study, but no more than 15.Can’t decide between philosophy and anthropology? Take both. An Arts and Humanities degree allows that. Student may become experts in film, music, and the arts if they choose. Those with an interest in the news and writing may want to take some courses in communications and English. A set of linguistics classes may also work for their liking. History buffs can take courses in world history and American history. All interests may combine to build a wide range of thinking.Surprisingly enough, this relaxed degree program has many interesting career paths. The students who graduate from it will have the skills that are required to become editors, translators, journalists, writers, teachers, and even social workers. The fact that the humanities degree is so broad is very beneficial to these positions because employers are more frequently considering skills over majors.Humanities majors will leave college with a set of marketable skills. The main one is communication; they will communicate effectively in a variety of ways. First, they will succeed in public speaking, impressing future employers, employees, and contemporaries. Second, their writing skills will be incomparable. They will write effective arguments and clear, well-articulated letters and documents for advertising, websites, and more.Further, these clever students will come away from their college education with a few things other students will have missed out on. They will have a nice understanding of history, the history of many cultures and many countries. Also, their cultural background from the courses can provide these students with an approachable cultural sensitivity that will benefit them heavily in careers that come in contact with a lot of diversity.
