Celebrating February ~ National Bird Feeding and Pets Dental Health Month

February is full of celebrations. It’s truly a month meant for lovers. Apart from Valentine’s Day, February also celebrates the unconditional love of pets. That’s right! February is National Bird Feeding and Pets Dental Health Month. That means along with showing love towards your beloved, the second month of calendar year also provides big opportunity to shower lots of love and care for pets and animals around.

Sponsored by National Bird-Feeding Society, National Wild Bird Feeding Month is celebrated to encourage people for feeding wild birds during coldest months of the year. Feeding birds in winters is utmost important, as during these months their natural food sources become deficient and they heavily rely on us filling our bird feeders with seed and suet.

As birds do not store lots of fats like other animals do in winters, so they need to restock their food supplies every day. This makes winter, the most crucial time of the year for our little feathered friends to fulfill their source of nutrition. Do you know, that some birds often can’t live for more than 24 hours without eating in this severe weather. So this month, feed your backyard feather friends to flock year round and let them feel that someone’s here who cares for them.

Now, coming to Pets’ Dental Health. Periodontal disease, an infection of gums, is one of the most common diseases that most animals encounter. That’s right! Like human beings, animals may also suffer from various dental problems. And, the key to prevention to these problems is very simple, inexpensive and may improve your human-animal bond — Brush your pet’s teeth on regular basis. This may seem funny, but it’s important to get your pet’s teeth brushed, in order to keep gum- and teeth-problems miles away!

If your Fido or Fluffy is having a bad breath, then you must consult a veterinarian! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with potential to damage not only your pet’s teeth and gums but its internal organs as well. To address the significance of oral health care for pets, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and several veterinary groups are sponsoring National Pet Dental Health Month in February.

Veterinarians strictly prohibit using human toothpaste for brushing pet’s teeth. It is too harsh for them, will wear away their enamel too fast, and may cause stomach upset when swallowed. So, it’s a wise option to consider tooth brushes and made-for-pets toothpaste for this purpose! In addition to brushing teeth, pet parents can also use special dental treats and toys for pets to keep provide them a Million Dollar Smile!
